My interest in interior design began when my parents bought our house, which needed extensive restoration. They hired an interior designer, and I loved seeing the rooms start coming together. Each visit revealed new changes, and I was fascinated by how the plans slowly took shape. My favourite part was visiting the design studio and helping choose furniture and fabrics.
Over the summer I visited my family’s caravan factory, where I spoke with designers about how they optimise small spaces. It was intriguing to see how they can design compact areas into modern living spaces that felt both functional and stylish, while also meeting user requirements.
While I have been at college I have been studying many designers and architects such as Thomas Heatherwick, Elizabeth Diller and Michelle Kauffman however one of my favourite designers is Amanda Levete. I was particularly drawn to her design of the V&A museum and her environmental approach to architecture. I was interested in Amanda’s perspective on tearing down buildings and the massive effect it has on our environment. By dismantling existing buildings we use significant amounts of energy, creating unnecessary amounts of pollution. I admire the way Amanda advocates for salvaging and restoring existing buildings.
I have been influenced by many of these designers. After some research I have found that they all take a similar approach on sustainability. Amanda Levete has shown me the importance of sustainability in design, pushing me to constantly reevaluate my ideas and think innovatively, challenging conventional approaches.
